Turning to God begins with acknowledging our need for Him. The Bible teaches that all people have sinned and fall short of God’s glory, and that salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ. Understanding this path involves three essential steps: acknowledging sin, believing in Jesus, and confessing Him as Lord and Savior.
1. Acknowledge That You Have Sinned
The Bible makes it clear that all have sinned:
“For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it.”
James 2:10 (ESV)
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
Romans 3:23 (ESV)
“As it is written: ‘None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.’”
Romans 3:10–12 (ESV)
“All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.”
Isaiah 53:6 (ESV)
Jesus emphasizes the need for spiritual rebirth:
“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
John 3:3 (ESV)
And the Bible declares that salvation is found in no one else:
“And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
Acts 4:12 (ESV)
The Ten Commandments in Exodus 20:2–17 and Deuteronomy 5:6–21 reveal God’s perfect moral standard. This shows us that none of us can meet it alone. They remind us that we all need forgiveness and redemption.
Acknowledging sin is the first step toward turning to God and seeking forgiveness.
2. Believe in Jesus Christ
Faith in Jesus is essential for salvation.
“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”
Acts 16:31 (ESV)
“I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.”
Luke 5:32 (ESV)
“Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”
Luke 13:3 (ESV)
“Do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?”
Romans 2:4 (ESV)
God’s love made a way through His Son:
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
John 3:16 (ESV)
“But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”
John 20:31 (ESV)
Faith itself is a gift that grows through hearing God’s Word:
“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”
Romans 10:17 (ESV)
“To him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”
Acts 10:43 (ESV)
3. Confess Christ as Your Lord and Savior
Confession is the outward expression of inward faith:
“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.”
Romans 10:9–10 (ESV)
Confession demonstrates that you belong to God:
“Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.”
1 John 4:15 (ESV)
Many believers publicly declared their new faith:
“Also many of those who were now believers came, confessing and divulging their practices.”
Acts 19:18 (ESV)
And God promises forgiveness when we sincerely confess our sins:
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
1 John 1:9 (ESV)
Conclusion
Turning to God requires humility, repentance, and faith. By acknowledging your sin, believing in Jesus Christ, and confessing Him as Lord, you receive God’s gift of forgiveness and eternal life.
No one can earn salvation through good deeds—it comes only through Jesus Christ. He alone offers forgiveness, restoration, and a new beginning to those who call upon His name.
“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
Romans 10:13 (ESV)
